What Military Benefits Am I Entitled To in Colorado?

The state of Colorado offers numerous benefits for Military Service members, veterans and families of veterans and Service members. These include VA loans, property tax exemption, employment benefits, tuition assistance, family relief funds, grants and recreation benefits. 

If you are an active or retired Service member, a veteran or a family member of a Service member, you may be eligible for some of these benefits. Eligibility depends on a number of factors including career status, residency status, military branch, and disability status. 

VA Loans

A VA Loan is a special mortgage loan for active Service members, veterans and their surviving spouses. It is offered through a US Department of Veterans Affairs program. The VA Loan allows eligible lenders to purchase a home with no down payment and no mortgage insurance. In many cases, a VA Loan will have lower interest rates than a conventional mortgage.

Disabled Veterans Property Tax Exemption 

Veterans who have a service-connected disability rated as at least a 50% permanent disability may be eligible for property tax exemption. The property tax exemption is 50% of the first $200,000 of the value of the home. To apply, you must have owned and occupied the home since January 1st of the year applying and the home must be your primary residence.

Property Tax Deferral Program For Active Military Personnel

Military personnel who are called to federal active duty may be eligible for property tax deferral. To be eligible, you must have been called into active military service for 30 or more consecutive days prior to January 1st in the year you are filing the claim. In addition, you must own and occupy the home as a primary residence and have paid all previous property taxes on the home.

Military Family Relief Fund

The Military Family Relief Fund provides assistance to family members of active military service members who are called to active duty. It is intended to help with the costs of food, medical expenses, and other necessities. To be eligible, the Service member must currently be on active military duty for a minimum of 30 days on overseas mobilization orders.

Veteran Employment Benefits

Veterans in Colorado are given preference when applying for government jobs, whether that be federal, state or county jobs. In addition, there are many services available for veterans seeking employment including vocational guidance, training, workshops and referral programs. Colorado Workforce Centers give priority to veterans. 

National Guard State Tuition Assistance

Colorado National Guard Service members may be eligible for the State Tuition Assistance program, which can cover up to 100% of tuition costs. It can also be used in conjunction with Federal Tuition Assistance. The State Tuition Assistance is available for schools that are approved by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and applicants must have a minimum of six months service prior to the semester starting.

Military Recreational Benefits

Military Service members in Colorado can enjoy a wide range of recreational benefits including free hunting and fishing licenses, free state park admission, special license plates, and more. In addition, many businesses in Colorado Springs and other cities across the state offer special deals and discounts for military personnel and their families.
