Loveland

Pros

Loveland Ski Area is located about 53 miles west of the city of Loveland. This spectacular mountain features more snow than any other Front Range or Summit County resort, complete with over 1,800 acres of remarkable terrain.

Girl snowboarding down a slope

One of the defining features of Loveland Ski Area is its reputation as a local's mountain, meaning it's much less crowded than the average Colorado summit. As a well-kept secret of Loveland, choosing this resort means shorter wait times and affordable lodging - a major plus for this area.

Loveland Ski Area is also notorious for its higher elevation, allowing for longer seasons that keep the snow light, fluffy, and fresh. Even with the altitude, many visitors prefer Loveland Ski Area for its easy accessibility, bypassing the everpresent traffic of the I-70.

Cons

While less busy, Loveland is quite small in comparison to other ski resorts in Summit County. There is a variety of dining choices and hotels nearby, but Loveland's base currently lacks a ski village or lodging - and there are not many activities available for those who opt out of the slopes.

Due to the mountain's higher altitude, high winds can cause problems, especially since most chairlifts are above the treeline.

Our Recommendation

If you're in the mood for a day trip, Loveland just might be the perfect spot for you. Loveland Ski Area is an excellent choice to beat the crowds and enjoy some fresh powder without too much of a drive.

Cons

With so many fun things to do, this ski resort fills up fast. You have to make your reservations early to secure a spot for you and your family. No matter when you arrive, you can expect to share the slopes and other activities with many other people. You will need to buy separate tickets for each activity you want to enjoy here. The costs can add up quickly as a result. You can keep your costs down by buying a season pass for the activities you enjoy most.

Breckenridge

Pros

Friends eating and drinking at a ski resort

Breckenridge Ski Resort is home to the highest summit elevation in the US, making it quite the bucket list item for residents and tourists alike.

In fact, more skiers and snowboarders took to the Breckenridge slopes last season than any other ski resort in the country.

One of the highlights of Breckenridge is the fun and relaxed atmosphere that thrives here. The town features endless shopping, dining, and drinks, but clearly wasn't built with a resort focus. In fact, the mountain exudes an old-west style, and thankfully provides many lodging opportunities as well as the ability to ski in and out quite easily.

Breckenridge also includes plenty of opportunities for non-skiers, such as:

  • Ice skating
  • An alpine slide
  • Children's museum
  • Family-friendly restaurants

Cons

As you might've guessed, Breckenridge is extremely popular so crowds are difficult to avoid. In terms of terrain, it also lacks the variety of other Summit County slopes.

Our Recommendation

If you're an avid skier, you won't regret taking a ride on the Imperial Express Super Chair - North America's highest chair lift, reaching 12,840 feet. With so many après-ski opportunities and activities for all interests, this is a great mountain to enjoy with the whole family.

Distance from Colorado Springs: Approx. 2.5 hours

Echo Mountain

Pros

Echo Mountain's slopes are easily accessible, and feature a newly renovated base area. As the closest ski resort to Denver, this mountain is frequented by residents, and can make a nice holiday addition for out-of-towners. Echo Mountain even offers night skiing on all slopes.

Cons

While extremely convenient, Echo Mountain's skiable terrain is quite limited, with a vertical drop of only 600 ft. Navigating Squaw Pass off the I-70 can also deter skiers during slippery winter weather.

Our Recommendation

If you're in the Denver area - especially in the evening - give Echo Mountain a try! The accessibility and night skiing availability will surely make for an alpine adventure to remember.

Monarch Mountain

Pros

Friends skiing together

In contrast to many other resorts across the country, Monarch Mountain doesn't bother with high-end shopping or excessive amenities. This mountain focuses solely on nature's beauty, including its history of monarch butterflies migrating from Mexico.

Monarch Mountain includes over 800 acres of ski opportunity and 350 inches of all-natural snowfall. While gearing to backcountry and intermediate skiers, there are plenty of options here for beginners to peruse.

Monarch's remote location contributes to its slow pace and less touristy nature, and also allows for more affordable lift tickets than other Colorado ski resorts.

Cons

As you might expect, Monarch Mountain keeps it simple. On-mountain dining is limited, there is no lodging at the base, and its remote location does not account for many local accommodation choices. Getting here also involves braving the 11,312 ft Monarch Pass, which some visitors do not particularly enjoy.

Our Recommendation

If you can leave behind the ritz of the typical Colorado ski resort, Monarch Mountain can make an excellent day trip.

Distance from Colorado Springs: Approx. 2.5 hours
